Gateway Revs Up Enterprises With Quad-Processor Server

Nicknamed the "4 x 4" and sporting more horsepower and reliability than a full-size SUV, Gateway, Inc.'s new Gateway 995 server gets enterprise-class organizations into top gear -- combining an ultra-dense 4U design, quad- processor power and four-hour service response time(1).

Designed for enterprise-class customers needing maximum performance in a space-saving design, the Gateway 995 is ideal for mission critical applications, such as high-end database apps (Oracle, SQL) and email (Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes). With its 4U chassis, the server fits in an industry-standard rack. In addition, customers can house multiple Gateway 995 servers in a single rack, saving costs and achieving greater computing power in a denser form factor.

To support the launch of the Gateway 995, Gateway also announced an alliance with IBM Global Services to provide field-based support for all products in Gateway's systems and networking line. This includes next- business-day and four-hour response time, on-site repair, parts logistics and other professional services(1). (See news release entitled, "Gateway Forms Strategic Relationship With IBM Global Services").

"The Gateway 995 delivers on the sweet-spot of high-end servers today -- excellent value, coupled with availability features to keep applications up and running," said Scott Weinbrandt, general manager of Gateway's Systems & Networking Products Division. "The 995 broadens our product line and truly addresses the needs of our enterprise customers, such as corporate data centers, institutions and any customer requiring a highly available solution. And by adding IBM Global Services, we are well-equipped to fulfill the needs of large organizations."

The Gateway 995 delivers top-notch performance by incorporating the latest server technologies, including up to four Intel Xeon MP 2.8GHz processors with HT technology, as well as support for a third-level cache and 400MHz front side bus for the ultimate data reliability. The system also supports up to 24GB of ECC DDR200/DDR226 memory, featuring ChipKill and Memory scrubbing technology for more accurate data delivery.

Unlike competitive offerings, the Gateway 995 comes standard with PCI Hot Plug, the new industry standard technology that allows IS managers to replace or add new PCI cards without having to power off the server. This results in increased uptime and reduced repair costs. PCI Hot Plug is compatible with industry standard PCI cards, as well as with the leading operating systems used today, including Windows 2000, Windows 2003 Standard and Linux. The server is designed with four 64-bit PCI-X Hot Plug slots, two 64-bit PCI-X Non-Hot Plug Slots and two 32-bit PCI slots.

Further contributing to the Gateway 995's high dependability, the server offers availability and environmental controls to promote increased server uptime. Active airflow control maintains the internal and external temperatures, while stabilizers ensure that hard drives are supported to minimize vibration and errors. Plus, redundant (5+1) cooling fans and hot-swap power supplies standard (three 430 watt 2+1) provide backup to keep the server running in case of power outages or other failures.

The Gateway 995 will alleviate IT managers' headaches, thanks to its serviceability and expandability features. The server offers tool-less access to key components, reducing time and costs associated with servicing. It can be expanded with additional functionality and storage via a Gigabit Ethernet network port and five hot-swap SCSI drives bays to support up to 730GB of internal storage with five 146GB drives. Fast access to applications and data through the integrated Ultra 320 SCSI Hot-Swap 10,000 RPM hard drives further improves performance.

Offered at $5,999(2), the base configuration of the Gateway 995 comes with a single Intel Xeon MP 2.0GHz processor, 512MB of ECC DDR200/DDR226 memory, dual channel Ultra SCSI controller, a single 36GB SCSI 10,000 RPM hard disk drive and universal sliding rails for installation onto any standard rack. The system is supported by Gateway's systems management software, Gateway Server Manager (GSM), which enables IT managers to easily manage and monitor server health within heterogeneous IT environments. Gateway Server Manager is compliant with the Intelligent Platform Management Interface 1.5 standard, providing out-of-band and in-band support. GSM works with other systems enterprise management tools, such as Hewlett-Packard OpenView, IBM Tivoli and CA UniCenter.

Gateway provides a comprehensive array of services designed to meet the needs of businesses and institutions, including a Three-Year Parts and Labor, Three- Year On-site, Next-Business-Day Limited Warranty(1). Gateway's optional four- hour, on-site response service, provided through IBM Global Services, gives customers a heightened level of support for maximum uptime(1). The company also offers 24x7 phone support through a dedicated team of MCSE, CNE and Linux certified technicians(1).

Gateway's launch of the Gateway 995 server is the latest advance from the company as it transforms itself from a traditional PC maker to a branded integrator of technology solutions. As a branded integrator, Gateway will launch an array of branded products across a host of new categories for the balance of the year, and will integrate those products into customized solutions for its consumer and business customers.
