Systems/Enterprise:

SUN TEAMS WITH ORACLE TO LOWER COLLABORATIVE MESSAGING

In tandem with the launch of Oracle's Collaboration Suite Release 2, Sun Microsystems Inc announced a joint effort to drive down total cost of ownership and improve reliability of collaboration for customers on Sun servers. Targeting the tens of thousands of customers running Oracle solutions on Sun servers, the companies organized joint sales training and telemarketing campaigns across three continents, introducing tools to help customers realize the benefits of low-cost computing by utilizing Oracle Collaboration Suite and Sun's StarOffice software.

"Collaboration applications are mission-critical for enterprises today," stated Steve Levine, vice president, Oracle Collaboration Suite Marketing. "Together, Oracle and Sun have armed their sales force with the tools needed to provide customers with a cost-effective, scalable and reliable collaboration platform."

This announcement builds on more than two successful decades of teaming on development to deliver customers platform scalability, security and reliability, and helps catapult Sun as a leading systems vendor in the enterprise-class collaborative services market.

"Oracle Collaboration Suite on Sun systems provides a solution that helps solve major issues for customers using enterprise messaging applications, especially cost, security, and complexity," said Stuart Wells, senior vice president, market development, Sun Microsystems. "At the same time, the interoperability and availability of StarOffice as an alternative office productivity suite allows customers to cut their tether to Microsoft's pricing schemes and frequent security breaches."

Oracle Collaboration Suite on Sun provides an integrated suite of applications that includes calendar, email, voice mail, search and Web conferencing capabilities, which can be accessed from the client's desktop, Web browser, PDA, telephone or wireless device. Oracle Collaboration Suite was developed on the Solaris/SPARC platform to help provide customers with investment protection and increased levels of security and scalability.

Additional benefits of Sun and Oracle development for collaboration include:

  • The Sun sizing tool -- available in Sun's iForce(SM) Competency Centers -- provides free sizing to customers who with the help of Sun Specialists can determine the appropriate hardware requirements for Oracle software before purchasing.
  • Reduction in scheduled and unscheduled downtime, with simplified administration.
  • Oracle Collaboration Suite Release 2 on Sun servers requires fewer system administrators -- on average, the ratio of Windows to UNIX system administrators is five to one.
  • Reduction in total cost of ownership, based on costs associated with software licensing, system administration and hardware. Sun offers a full range of systems from 2 to 64 CPUs, which support one operating system, Solaris. Scale up or down with no migration costs.
  • Single platform for file management, eliminating redundant servers and duplicate files
  • Software security and reliability, taking advantage of both Oracle Collaboration Suite and Solaris OS built-in security benefits
  • Reaffirms the companies' joint announcement to make low-cost computing a reality and extend support for Oracle applications on Sun's full line of Solaris SPARC, Solaris x86 and Linux systems.
