Pervasive.SQL Dbase Updated To Enhance Data Security

Pervasive Software Inc, a leading provider of data management solutions powering the success of application developers worldwide, has announced the availability of the beta version of Pervasive.SQL V8 Security, incorporating various security-related enhancements. This updated version of the high-performance, embeddable database engine, Pervasive.SQL, will deliver a unified security model protecting critical data across all Pervasive.SQL access interfaces down to the operating system (OS). This release also includes enhanced encryption of data as it travels through the network. General availability of this technology is expected later this calendar year, and this will be a paid upgrade for those who have not purchased Pervasive.SQL V8.

"Data security, as always, is a key concern of application developers worldwide," said Wayne Kernochan, managing vice president, databases, development environments and software infrastructure, Aberdeen Group. "A complete data-security solution should address data protection in a consistent fashion throughout the entire stack, including the application layer, the network, the database and the operating system. The security model and encryption enhancements in Pervasive.SQL V8 Security offer a comprehensive data-security solution to small to medium-sized businesses and SMB-targeted applications that in the past has often been available only to large-enterprise development organizations and large-enterprise applications."

"Security, especially concerning the database, is a strategic element for enterprises in their IT projects," said Paul Gential, director of development and corporate partnerships, Geac Enterprise Solutions France. "So, we are very interested in this new version and are ready to start testing the new security features and functionality to be able to integrate this new version into the newer versions of our software."

Pervasive.SQL V8 Security provides configurable backward compatibility with existing Btrieve and Pervasive.SQL applications, with no additional development required. The expanded features in this release also include enhanced encryption that will help prevent the capture of data as it moves across the wire. Through the alignment of the OS with the application's database access rights, Pervasive.SQL V8 Security reduces the chance that unauthorized internal or external users will compromise data integrity. These features, combined with the unified security model across the transactional and relational engines, result in an easy to install and low total cost of ownership solution for independent software vendors.

"The release of V8 Security demonstrates our continued investment in our core database and addresses the needs of our global customer base," said Suaad Sait, vice president, marketing, Pervasive Software. "These security enhancements will help small to mid-sized companies proactively secure their mission-critical data."

The beta version is available for immediate download from the company's Web site at www.pervasive.com/security. The general availability of Pervasive.SQL V8 Security is planned for later this calendar year. V8 licensers will be able to download the upgrade from the Pervasive Web site at this time at no additional charge.
