Networking:
University Deploys Ethernet
Switching From Extreme Networks
The University of Warwick has selected Extreme Networks, Inc. for a
complete
campus-wide network resulting in scalable 10-Gigabit Ethernet backbone
connectivity. Working with pan-European network services and solutions
provider Telindus, Extreme Networks has supplied its advanced switching
systems for a network designed to support high-speed network access and IP
convergence. The network serves a combined staff and student enrollment of
more than 21,000.
The University of Warwick's challenge was to create a comprehensive network
infrastructure that would enable reliable access to the campus backbone from
its 5,300 student rooms. The complete solution, built with Extreme Networks'
advanced 10-Gigabit and Gigabit Ethernet core and edge switching platforms,
allows Warwick to provide students with connections to different University
services along with the delivery of high-speed Internet access. Each of the
6,000 connection points positioned throughout the campus receive 100Mpbs
connectivity for the transfer of library files, e-learning applications and
associated multimedia material. The network also provides the upgrade of
performance and bandwidth to assist with the future delivery of streaming
video and voice applications over the network.
With its global presence, numerous product awards and number one market
position for Layer 3 10 Gigabit Ethernet port shipments (as reported by the
Dell'Oro Group, quarter ended March 2003), Extreme Networks is recognized as
the leader in high-performance Ethernet switching. The Company combines
scalable switching with extensive bandwidth management and Quality of Service
(QoS) features to support applications and services. These features are
achieved consistently across each switching device to address every part of
the network.
"We wanted to leap ahead as far as possible with the most appropriate
technology foundation," said Mary Visser, assistant director of IT services
for the University of Warwick. "We achieve this with a stable, scalable and
simple network provided by Extreme Networks. Now, applications such as voice
and streaming video are readily supported to deliver a much more meaningful
experience for our students."
Integrator Telindus worked with Extreme to recommend a complete core and
edge
solution at the University of Warwick. The deployment includes the
BlackDiamond modular switches that deliver bandwidth to Summit line of
switches at the edge of the network. The specific design supports high levels
of resiliency in the network while delivering the flexibility to support
applications.
