- The Global Grid Forum (GGF) held its eighth conference this week in
Seattle. Many discussions took place concerning how the concept of the Grid
has changed since its early inception.

HASTAC: THE HUMAN DIMENSIONS OF EMERGING SCIENCE AND TECH
- HASTAC (pronounced "Haystack"), the Humanities, Arts, Science, and
Technology Advanced Collaboratory, announces the launch of its consortium, a
strategic alliance of scientists, humanists, artists, social theorists,
legal specialists, and information technology specialists. HASTAC is founded
on the belief that the future of cyberinfrastructure must be driven by
creative discovery across disciplinary divides because of the profound
impact of new technologies on individuals and society.

GRIDXPERT OFFERS GRID "PEOPLE RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT"

- French startup GridXpert has begun shipping Syngery, a Grid software
application geared toward managing the needs and requirements of users
accessing a Grid (consumers, service providers, administrators and project
managers) rather than the underlying resources.

ORION GRID POSITIONS SHARCNET AMONG WORLD'S FASTEST
- An agreement announced recently with the Ontario Research and Innovation
Optical Network (ORION) helped the Shared Hierarchical Academic Research
Computing Network (SHARCNET) position itself among the world's fastest
supercomputers, by combining the power of SHARCNET's geographically
distributed sites to produce a computational infrastructure equivalent to
those of the top 50 computer installations in the world.

RESEARCHERS CREATE INTERNET GRID TO TEST NEW TECHNOLOGIES
- In an effort to lower the cost and risk of introducing services on the
Internet, researchers are building a testbed for new technologies on top of
the global network.

NEW SOFTWARE FOR GLOBUS TOOLKIT RELEASED FOR GRIDS
- Platform Computing and the Globus Project announced that Platform's new
"Community Scheduler Framework" (CSF) will be contributed for inclusion in
future releases of the Globus Toolkit, a set of software and services that
is central to Grid computing. The target for inclusion is Fall 2003.

PURDUE IT DIVISION EMPLOYS GRID COMPUTING
- United Devices, a market leader in secure Grid solutions, announced that
it is in the process of linking 2,300 computers at Purdue University to
create a computational Grid to perform research that previously was
performed using supercomputers.

TACC ESTABLISHES GRID RELATIONSHIP WITH SUN
- The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at
Austin has established a relationship with Sun Microsystems to extend the
process of scientific discovery through advanced visualization and Grid
technologies.

- 3PAR, a leading provider of Utility Storage, announced recently that

- Declines in the per port ASP for Gigabit Ethernet (GE) transceivers will

- Topspin Communications announced a significant technology enhancement to
its Switched Computing System. Topspin has added a hardware abstraction
layer and programmable APIs to its switches which provide the first server,
storage, and software agnostic programmable interconnect for creating
flexible Grid computing architectures.

VISION SOLUTIONS ANNOUNCES ORION SOLUTIONS LAB
- Vision Solutions, a leading managed availability solutions provider
announced the ORION Solutions Lab which allows partners and customers
hands-on testing and training on ORION with the engineers and technologists
who developed the multi-platform solution.

announced the deployment of an IPv6 trial network between KDDI Laboratories
Japan and U.S. locations, in cooperation with the WIDE Project managed by
Prof. Jun Murai.
