JAVAONE 2003 SETS NEW GRID
INDUSTRY AGENDA
Thousands of Java developers, partners and users came together on the first
day of JavaOne, one of the world's largest technology events, to further the
growth of the world's most popular technology platform for Network Computing:
Java.
Opening the show, Sun Microsystems, Inc., the creator and leading advocate
of
Java, introduced new Java technologies; tools; communities including java.com
for consumers, and java.net for developers; market initiatives; and a new look
for the Java brand. Sun also set the stage for its announcement this week of
Project Rave, a new tool that enables corporate developers to simplify
development of corporate applications. Today's announcements, combined with
new marketing programs and an exciting new look for the Java brand, will
further advance Java technology against would-be competitive standards.
"It's now evident that the Internet's bigger than any one company, any one
product, or any one operating system," said Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice
president of software, Sun Microsystems. "It's also increasingly evident that
Java's become the unifying force, bringing greater security, productivity,
interoperability, and the capability to do more to everything connected to the
Web -- from mobile handsets, to medical equipment, set top boxes to servers.
There is a tidal wave of Java adoption occurring in the world, bringing value
to developers, licensees, businesses, and now consumers -- this is an
unstoppable revolution, driving a rising tide of opportunity for the entire
Java community."
New Look Makes Java Brand Even More Visible
For the first time since its launch eight years ago, the Java logo has been
updated with a modern, smart and recognizable design. Sun is working with
dozens of service providers and consumer electronics giants on a new "Java
Powered" branding program that will make Java technology even more visible to
consumers on devices such as phones and PDAs. According to independent
research, the Java brand is one of the world's most recognized technology
brands, with greater than 85 percent recognition by developers, IT
professionals, students and consumers from all walks of life.
"As Java's popularity has grown, so has the opportunity to have it appear
in
form factors from billboards to miniature phone displays," said Ingrid Van Den
Hoogen, senior director of Java and Strategic Marketing for Software, Sun
Microsystems. "While the essence of the new look is Java, it's cleaner and
simpler, making it more recognizable in everything from smartcards and
printers to phones."
Visitors to the JavaOne2003 conference can experience the new look in an
advertising campaign sponsored by Sun and running on billboards across San
Francisco.
java.com Showcases Java Technologies and Partners to Consumers
java.com, a new Web site, showcases and promotes dozens of consumer
products
and partners using Java technologies. java.com has Java technology-based
content and services consumers can use to learn about the innovative uses of
Java technology, browse a full selection of Java-based mobile and desktop
applications including games, and download the necessary environment, the most
current Java Runtime Environment (JRE). java.com provides the backdrop and
payoff to the "Java Powered" advertising campaign targeted for Fall 2003.
java.net to Expand Java Technology-Based Innovations and Community
java.net, a new Web portal for the world's three million Java developers
and
innovators, will fuel the growth of Java. java.net provides collaboration
tools for developers to deliver practical Java applications across industries,
academia and consumer markets. java.net is sponsored by Sun with
infrastructure provided by CollabNet, Inc. and O'Reilly & Associates, and
features an array of open source projects focused on wireless, enterprise and
desktop Java technology-based development. Applications and services developed
in this open source collaborative community can be featured at java.com,
providing developers with instant end- user awareness and demand.
Java Momentum Continues
Java technology is everywhere. It is the de facto open platform for Network
Computing, underpinning Sun's vision and commitment to allow anyone to access
information anytime, anywhere, from any device. Java's end-to-end technology,
provided in a single platform, reduces the cost and complexity of application
and Web service development. It speeds time to application, offering unique
collaboration opportunities from Sun and the international developer
community. Java technology also delivers mobility with what is undisputedly
the most secure platform for application development and deployment. For these
reasons and many more which will be highlighted this week at JavaOne 2003,
Java technology has become a significant change agent in business and consumer
markets, and a thriving economic engine for developers, carriers, service
providers and Sun.
Java technology is the essential ingredient in a remarkable array of
products
from leading brands including Siemens, Yahoo!, Nintendo, Motorola, Vodafone,
MTV, HBO, GM OnStar and the NHL.
Ovum Research predicts that Java technology will be in 267 million mobile
devices by the beginning of 2004. Another firm reports that by 2007 almost 100
percent of handsets will have Java technology capabilities. Fifty-three
carriers worldwide offer Java services on their wireless networks today.
In the fast-growing wireless Java technology market, Sun announced today
that
it will work with industry leaders Motorola, Nokia, Siemens and Sony Ericsson
to unify their application testing and certification programs into a single
initiative to help accelerate the availability of applications and services
for Java technology-enabled mobile devices.
Sun also this week will announce important news in the convergence of Web
services with Java technology. These steps, which demonstrate Sun's leadership
in advancing the Java Technology for the Enterprise with upgrades and
enhancements including WS-I Basic Profile support, enable Sun to deliver a Web
services application platform that provides best-in-class XML-based Web
services powered by Java technology.
In the consumer market, $3 billion industry-wide is dedicated to Java
technology, from gaming to devices to interactive television sets. Sun this
week announced that it is aggressively expanding its Java-centric efforts in
the gaming technology market to reach even more consumers as Java technology
continues to expand everywhere.
Ninety percent of Web users experience Java technology-based content, with
more than seven million Web pages powered by dynamic Java content. Java
technology also is in devices including microprocessors, printers, smartcards,
cars, personal devices, robots, medical equipment, gas station pumps and even
the Mars Exploration Rover.
Additional data points from top market research firms and Sun illustrate
the
continued strong momentum of Java technology:
- As of May 2003, there were more than three million Java Developer
Connection (JDC) registrations and 72 million JRE downloads.
- IDC reports that nearly 74 percent of professional developers in North
America used Java as their primary language in 2001, and IDC estimates that
the Java IDE market will more than double from its 2001 size in the next five
years to $453 million in 2006. This is an 14.9 percent compound annual growth
rate.
- 70 percent of enterprises surveyed by Gartner Group use Java technology,
according to the report and titled Application Development Skills and
Technology Trends by Tom Berg and Joe Feiman, Sept. 2002
- More than 63 percent of developers say Java technology is the most
prevalent platform for embedded and small devices, according to another
industry survey.
