Xilinx, Samsung To Develop Metro
Edge Network Solution
At SUPERCOMM 2003, Xilinx, Inc. and Samsung Telecommunications America, a
leading supplier of Metropolitan Area Network solutions, announced that
Samsung developed its next generation of IP switch/router products using
Xilinx Virtex-II Pro FPGAs. Samsung showcased its next-generation Galaxy
Technology Platform at SUPERCOMM 2003 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Because of its reconfigurable Xilinx PLD-based architecture, Samsung's next
generation platform will offer service providers a flexible service platform,
capable of adapting to rapidly changing standards as they emerge. This
reconfigurable architecture -- that would have been impossible using standard
cell technology -- can be repaired or upgraded with new features, even after
installation in the field. This unique approach offers significant cost
savings to Samsung customers by eliminating the need for service calls, or on-
site repairs.
"Xilinx FPGAs provided the flexibility and advanced features we needed for
our
collapsed backbone architecture," said Pradeep Samudra, vice president of
Samsung Telecommunications Broadband Network Lab. "Competing devices would
have required a multi-chip solution and couldn't compare with the advanced
features inherent in the Virtex-II Pro devices, including the on-board multi-
gigabit RocketIO serial transceivers we needed to achieve the breakthrough
speed and performance of our design. "
Xilinx, IP, Software Design Tools and Design Services Shorten Development
Time
Samsung also took advantage of Xilinx's vast IP library, selecting the
Xilinx
10GbE, SPI-4.2 and Xaui interface. Xilinx's ISE software design environment
and Xilinx Design Services helped to reduce design time and propel Samsung's
time-to-market. "Xilinx suite of solutions provided the least risk to the
design and by using Xilinx Design Services, we avoided hiring additional
engineers for this project. We were guaranteed an expert design team and they
completed the task ahead of schedule."
"Today, Xilinx is shipping the lowest cost high-performance FPGAs in the
industry, offering from 4 to 20 on-board 3.125 Gbps serial transceivers.
Xilinx Virtex FPGAs are the number one choice of designers worldwide, based on
industry-leading performance and cost-effectiveness," said Rich Sevcik, senior
vice president and general manager of Xilinx FPGA Products. "Samsung's unique
application of our software, silicon, and design services is a testament to
our ability to drastically reduce time-to-market and cost for our
customers."
