SUN TO IGNITE ADRENALINE RUSH IN
JAVA GRID GAMING
Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced plans to focus its technology and market
development resources at the multi-billion dollar network Grid gaming
marketplace through the creation of the Game Technologies Group, and the
appointment of Chris Melissinos as Chief Gaming Officer. Sun plans to extend
Java and Solaris technology to game players and developers on the
millions of network connected desktops, consoles and mobile devices emerging
as gaming platforms. Melissinos will provide the overall vision and strategy
for the Game Technologies Group, which will have responsibility for driving
the development and delivery of Java technology-based solutions to the video
games industry across client and server.
"Java technology is igniting an adrenaline rush in gaming -- offering
developers the promise of ultra-high performance, truly cross platform gaming
with massive market opportunity, and offering end users access to the coolest
new games on a tidal wave of new devices," said Jonathan Schwartz, executive
vice president, Software, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "We and the Java community
have made great progress in putting Java technology at the heart of the gaming
industry -- on servers and clients -- we see the opportunity, now with the
creation of the Game Technologies Group, and Chris' appointment, we're turning
up the heat with even more focus and resources."
"As the online video game market expands, so do the hurdles and
complexities
of building online services," said Chris Melissinos, chief gaming officer, Sun
Microsystems, Inc. "Sun is in a unique position as we've been developing
massively connected environments for years, and we plan to use that knowledge
to further the capabilities of the gaming community."
Massive, multi-player online gaming is a dynamic, ongoing gaming
environment
that exists simultaneously for thousands of players. Sun plans to deliver Java
technology-based solutions and tools that leverage industry standards for
next-generation online games, simplifying the development process for multiple
devices and the integration of those devices into one game framework.
Sun's new Game Technologies Group plans to develop next-generation
technologies to allow game developers to do more with Java technology and
reach more people than ever before. Sun plans to bring its expertise in
building highly scalable, reliable and serviceable online infrastructures to
the game industry, and ease the complexities of moving games online and
playing them across different devices.
Sun plans to work with the open source community to build Java client
technologies that leverage industry standards and allow those devices to
communicate directly with Sun's game server architecture. During the 2003
JavaOne Conference next week, Sun also plans to unveil a significant update to
Javagaming.org.
