Breaking News - Operating Systems & Middleware:
ON Technology Releases Java Application Developers Kit
ON Technology, a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure management
solutions, has announced the immediate availability of the ON Application
Developers Kit (ADK). The new offering provides a series of open programming
interfaces that significantly reduce implementation time by allowing customers
and service providers to rapidly integrate ON's management solution with
previously installed third-party tools and corporate information resources.
The ADK provides increased flexibility for customers and service providers who
want to extend and enhance ON's built-in management functionality by writing
custom programs in standard languages such as Java and C++. The ADK builds
upon ON's previously released open interfaces, including the Command Line
Interface (CLI) and ITOOL, a scripting language for customizing the actions of
ON agents. For example, the ADK can be used to write programs that:
- Periodically check a retailer's supply chain management system - such as
SAP - for updated price-list information, and then automatically deploy new
price lists to all point-of-sale (POS) terminals across all of the retailer's
stores, without requiring administrative intervention.
- Automatically create an alert on a network management console - such as
IBM/Tivoli, HP OpenView, or BMC Patrol - when a customer-specific error
condition is detected by the ON solution.
- Enable users of Help Desk systems - such as Remedy - to automatically re-
install critical software on remote devices from a custom icon on their Help
Desk consoles, without needing to learn how to use the ON administrative
console.
- Share information about users, devices, and policies with corporate SQL
databases such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server, enterprise frameworks such
as Microsoft SMS or CA Unicenter, and directory services such as Active
Directory, Novell Directory Services (NDS), and LDAP.
"Our customers tell us that one of our key competitive differentiators is the
flexibility and openness of our solution," said Phil Neray, Vice-President of
Marketing, ON Technology. "Unlike closed and proprietary management solutions
that offer inflexible, 'our way or the highway' functionality, ON provides an
open architecture based on the Java standard and a standard, platform-
independent SQL database, with a choice of implementing on either UNIX or
Windows platforms. As a result, customers can leverage their existing
technology investments when implementing our solution, which significantly
reduces time to implementation and greatly enhances ROI."
