VERITAS/Cisco Offer 1St Look At New Sto Networking Solution

VERITAS Software Corporation, a leading storage software provider, unveiled a proof of concept demonstration with Cisco Systems, showcasing a next generation storage networking solution at the VERITAS VISION 2003 users conference in Las Vegas. VERITAS and Cisco previewed a demonstration of VERITAS' storage virtualization software embedded within the Cisco MDS 9000 Family of Multilayer Directors and Fabric Switches. The new storage networking solution, which is scheduled to be available the second half of this year, will give IT organizations the flexibility to manage storage environments with market leading volume management software(1) from VERITAS on Cisco storage networking hardware platforms.

Intelligent switch-based storage management solutions, such as the one demonstrated by VERITAS and Cisco, will help companies increase the efficiency and utilization of storage and server resources. By consolidating storage management services in the network, IT organizations will be able to reduce their overall operation and management costs. Additionally, customers can centrally manage storage from a point within the network, provisioning storage as needed to applications running on host servers in a heterogeneous environment.

VERITAS uniquely makes its virtualization and SRM software available across heterogeneous servers, storage, operating system or switch platforms to give organizations the freedom to manage storage in the environment that best meets their needs. VERITAS provides customers with application-based volume management technology wherever they choose, in the host or the network.

The Cisco MDS 9000 Family of SAN switches offer the scalability, multi-protocol support and high availability features to meet the requirements for storage networks of all sizes and architectures. Currently available models are the Cisco MDS 9509 and 9506 Multilayer Directors and the Cisco MDS 9216 Multilayer Fabric Switch along with the Cisco MDS 9000 Fibre Channel Switch Modules and the Cisco MDS 9000 IP Storage Services Module.

Additionally, Soni Jiandani, vice president of the Storage Technology Group at Cisco highlighted the partnership between Cisco and VERITAS and the benefits of storage networking during a keynote at Storage World Conference in Anaheim, Calif.

"The Cisco MDS 9000 Family provides an open platform for hosting intelligent storage services, such as VERITAS virtualization software," said Luca Cafiero, senior vice president and general manager of the Switching, Voice, and Storage Technology Group at Cisco. "The joint development by Cisco and VERITAS results in an innovative solution that provides customers with centralized management and storage provisioning for greater operational efficiencies."

"Working with partners like Cisco allows VERITAS to extend its industry-leading storage management software to a new platform -- the network switch," said Mark Bregman, executive vice president of product operations, VERITAS Software. "As the clear market leader in host-based volume management technology with more than 70 percent of the market(2), only VERITAS can deliver its industry-standard software throughout the network, providing storage intelligence wherever it best meets our customers' needs."
