- One of the GRIDS Center's target communities is NEES, the George Brown,
Jr., Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation. Funded by the National Science
Foundation (NSF), NEES is a distributed virtual laboratory for earthquake
experimentation and modeling. Its users are researchers who seek to design
buildings and other structures that are more resistant to seismic events and
disasters in general.

MICROSOFT AND HP DEVELOP DYNAMIC DATA CENTER PROTOTYPE
- In his keynote address at the 12th annual Windows Hardware Engineering
Conference (WinHEC), Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect at
Microsoft Corp., will showcase a concept of a Dynamic Data Center (DDC)
jointly developed with HP.

- Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced that Jini technology is being
successfully applied to help solve the dynamic networking problems of
customers in a wide range of emerging and evolving markets.

- Computer Associates International, Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer Sanjay Kumar predicted that new "macro technologies" such as
