PMC-Sierra Introduces 1st
Integrated Multi-Rate PHY/Framers
PMC-Sierra Inc has introduced the PM5360 S/UNI MULTI-48 and PM5354 S/UNI
MULTI-2x12 devices which offer a complete physical layer solution for
simultaneously aggregating, transporting and terminating OC-3/STM-1,
OC-12/STM-4, and OC-48/STM-16 Packet-over-SONET (POS) and ATM traffic on a
single line card. The S/UNI MULTI devices are ideal for use in physical
interfaces to connect network elements that demand rapid bandwidth expansion
like xDSL access multiplexors (DSLAMs), cable modem termination systems
(CMTSs), and wireless base-station controllers to edge routers and
multi-service switches. A single multi-rate line card powered by one S/UNI
MULTI-48 device, in conjunction with available multi-rate or pluggable optics
modules, replaces up to three line card designs, addresses multiple
applications and offers service providers unprecedented bandwidth scalability
and network reliability.
Marconi Using PMC-Sierra's S/UNI MULTI-48 in Multi-service Switch Router
"Marconi is utilizing PMC-Sierra's S/UNI MULTI-48 in its industry-leading
capabilities of the BXR-48000 to help reduce costs and speed delivery of
value-added services for service provider customers," said Dave Blakeney, vice
president, engineering, for Marconi's Broadband Switching and Routing
group.
"With the S/UNI MULTI-48, our BXR-48000 is better positioned to enable
service
providers to manage voice, video, and data traffic with greater efficiency,
offering new differentiated IP services while continuing to leverage legacy
revenue streams and reducing operating expenses."
Flexible, Scalable Solution Optimized for Cost-efficient Metro and Access
Networks
When used with multi-rate optics, the S/UNI MULTI devices allow the
deployment
of a line card with field programmable line rates. As a result, simplified
inventory management coupled with the ability to efficiently adapt ports to
match bandwidth demand represents significant cost savings for service
providers. The S/UNI MULTI devices can also be used in SONET/SDH automatic
protection switching (APS) architectures which meet the stringent requirements
of quality of service (QoS) and service level agreements (SLAs) demanded by
enterprise and business users. Furthermore, both devices support
channelization of each SONET/SDH tributary down to the STS-3c level which
enable carriers to offer additional services with the same line card.
"The S/UNI MULTI-48 and S/UNI MULTI-2x12 devices add to PMC-Sierra's
already
extensive line of S/UNI products and illustrates our commitment to offering
optimized solutions for addressing today's challenging metro access markets,"
said Steve Perna, vice president and general manager of PMC-Sierra's Service
Provider Division. "Combining PMC-Sierra's proven technology with multi-rate
capability in a highly integrated PHY/framer device offers system designers
benefits which include minimizing design risk and effort as well as maximizing
the reuse of hardware and software components."
High Density, Multi-rate, Standard-compliant Devices Simplify Design and
Reduce Board Level Cost
The S/UNI MULTI-48 and S/UNI MULTI-2x12 maximize the ease of implementation
and board space savings by combining multi-rate clock recovery and synthesis
with the framing and mapping functions, replacing up to five discrete
components. With the software effort now reaching more than half of the total
system development cost, leveraging a single design with the S/UNI MULTI
devices across several line cards becomes increasingly important to OEMs.
The S/UNI MULTI devices include PMC-Sierra's standard compliant POS-PHY
Level
3 (PL3) interface for POS traffic and provide UTOPIA Level 3 (UL3) interface
for ATM traffic giving system designers access to a broad range of Layer 2 and
3 functions. PMC-Sierra offers the industry's broadest PL3 family comprising a
wide selection of line interfaces including OC-48, OC-12, OC-3, Gigabit
Ethernet, DS3, E3, J2 as well as channelized ATM, POS and DS3.
