IBM'S NEW DEEP COMPUTING INITIATIVE TAKES NEW APPROACHES

IBM recently announced the creation of its Deep Computing initiative. Building upon IBM's supercomputing leadership IBM plans to leverage supercomputers, specialized software, and deep industry knowledge to help solve customers' complex business problems.

The Deep Computing team will bring a comprehensive approach to IBM's HPC efforts by combining industry knowledge with high-performance software and hardware using open standards, such as the Grid protocols, to help customers in every industry gain insight and transform their business. While some of the most ambitious work still happens in government labs, the potential for Deep Computing breakthroughs in areas as diverse as drug and product design, simulation and animation, financial and weather modeling is almost unlimited.

"Our continued success in this influential segment is due to our ability to deliver the tremendous value of IBM technology and expertise along with key partnerships at the individual industry level," said Mark Shearer, vice president, IBM Systems Group. "Deep Computing speaks to our supercomputing heritage as well as our depth as a company to deliver complete business transforming HPC solutions today."

According to IDC, IBM was number one in HPC market share in the fourth quarter of 2002, and had the most processing power on the latest independent Top 500 List of Supercomputers. With POWER4 and the upcoming POWER5 microprocessors, IBM anticipates continued leadership in Grids and cost-effective Linux clusters, and believes that the Deep Computing team will help IBM expand its leadership position and drive broader customer relationships.

The new cross-IBM initiative will be lead by Dave Turek, as vice president of Deep Computing. Dave is a veteran and articulate voice of IBM's HPC community, most recently in Grid and Linux clusters.
