CA Leverages AMD's 64-Bit
Processor For Linux
Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) extended its leadership in
enterprise Linux by announcing general availability of the first enterprise-
class RDBMS for the 64-bit AMD Opteron processor, Advantage Ingres RDBMS. With
Advantage Ingres running on AMD Opteron processors, customers can achieve
outstanding application performance on low-cost Linux-based systems, while
seamlessly transitioning to 64-bit environments.
64-bit computing delivers high performance and scalability for Very Large
Database (VLDB) business applications. CA has worked closely with AMD to
ensure interoperability with CA solutions on systems based on AMD Opteron
processors. Advantage Ingres servers running on the AMD Opteron processors can
directly address a vast amount of real memory, enabling large database caches
that significantly reduce expensive disk I/O while boosting application
performance and scalability. Combined with the lower cost of the Linux
operating system, CA's Advantage Ingres and AMD Opteron processors therefore
offer superlative value for the corporate data center.
In full 64-bit mode, the AMD Opteron processor improves I/O performance of
Advantage Ingres by as much as a factor of 10 in CA's internal tests.
Significant performance improvement also may result when using the Opteron
processor with 32-bit applications.
"IT budgets are simply not growing as fast as the demands that the business
is
putting on the data center," said Aline Gerew, CA's vice president for
Advantage Ingres development. "But with CA's Advantage Ingres deployed on 64-
bit AMD Opteron processors running Linux, customers fulfill their performance
requirements within the resource constraints they now face."
"Servers based on AMD Opteron processors can help extend Advantage Ingres
customers' significant investments in relational database business solutions,"
said Rich Heye, vice president and general manager of AMD's Microprocessor
Business Unit. "64-bit computing will offer these customers the ability to
exploit these information assets in innovative data warehouse and business
intelligence applications. The AMD Opteron processor, combined with Advantage
Ingres, will offer customers a compelling solution for obtaining both high
performance and lowered data management costs."
