Breaking News - Security:

Candle Expands Security Offering For IBM WebSphere MQ

Candle Corporation, a leading enterprise infrastructure management provider, introduced PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ, a solution that expands the protection of sensitive information across the WebSphere MQ middleware environment. PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ combines Candle's security and management solutions for WebSphere MQ with leading encryption technologies from RSA Security Inc. to provide a powerful security solution that also simplifies the security management process.

PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ helps organizations meet increasingly stringent security requirements for the financial services, healthcare and other industries. Securing enterprise middleware is critical as organizations rely on Web-based transactions such as online banking for daily business operations. The new solution -- which builds on award-winning technology from Candle's MQSecure offering -- enables users to implement additional application security features to minimize risk of exposure.

"The middleware layer is often overlooked when protecting a business, which can create an Achilles' heel in a security infrastructure," said Mark Ehr, senior analyst, Enterprise Management Associates, Inc. "Solutions such as Candle's PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ provide needed security and management flexibility to enable organizations to maintain a high level of information assurance across an enterprise and between partners."

PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ provides features and benefits that include:

  • Increased authentication verifies the identities of message senders and recipients, providing users with the added assurance of communicating with trusted partners
  • Full Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) support strengthens security while providing users with added flexibility when using encrypted messaging
  • An expanded ability to validate that data transmissions and message archives have not been altered is critical for auditing requirements

"Many organizations do not take full advantage of their security solutions because they are often too complex and cumbersome to manage effectively," said Jay H. Lang, chief technologist, Distributed Computing Professionals Inc. "PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ is easy to install and use to develop custom programs and manage across the enterprise. It is also reasonably priced for distributed platforms."

PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ supplements the user authorization capabilities of various external security programs, such as RACF, ACF2 and Top Secret on OS/390, as well as operating system security tools for UNIX and Windows systems.

"The current business climate and a variety of federal security requirements are leading enterprises to invest in increased security and end- to-end verification of message transmissions," said Victor Chang, vice president, developer solutions division at RSA Security. "We are pleased to support Candle's delivery of high-level protection for the WebSphere MQ environment and help enable users to seamlessly extend information assurance across the enterprise."

New Features Enhance and Streamline Security

PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ increases the protection of data and streamlines security management through these enhancements:

  • Full PKI Support: Empowers organizations to use software from any certificate or registration authority provider to generate RSA Security key pairs. Users streamline and simplify the encryption management process by exporting the software into the PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ key management infrastructure
  • Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) Support: Enables users to conduct a certificate "background check" by an independent third party before accepting a certificate. Users can accelerate the revocation status of certificates by connecting directly to an OCSP responder
  • Message-Embedded Digital Certificates: Provide simplified and expedited certificate verification. The technology also provides added credentials to a certificate to make messages more secure
  • Auditability Enhancements: Enable organizations to nonrepudiate, or verify, that messages have not been altered during either the transmission or archive process. The ability to audit data transmissions enables organizations to comply with federal regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and similar rules in the financial services sector and other industries

"Organizations continually balance the need to protect sensitive data by establishing multiple checkpoints across an enterprise with the business requirement to quickly guarantee the integrity of all transactions among partners," said David Caddis, vice president, Application Infrastructure Management Group, Candle Corporation. "PathWAI Secure for WebSphere MQ provides a new level of security for IBM's market-leading middleware by providing encryption while also reducing the complexity of managing the security of enterprise middleware environments."

Market Leadership

Candle's new security offering extends its PathWAI modular suite of best- in- class solutions. Businesses leverage PathWAI to rapidly architect, develop, deploy, secure and manage their WebSphere infrastructures. With a proven track record of more than 2,000 successful WebSphere customer implementations, Candle is uniquely positioned to provide security and management solutions for IBM middleware environments. Further, leading industry analyst agencies -- including Gartner Inc., META Group Inc. and WinterGreen Research -- cite Candle as the WebSphere management tools leader.
