Breaking News - Networking:

Extreme Networks Unveils Next-Generation Gigabit Ethernet

Extreme Networks, Inc. announced next-generation switching technology for the award-winning BlackDiamond chassis-based switch. Extreme Networks is introducing two new BlackDiamond modules, based on its third-generation Triumph chipset, that deliver a unique combination of scalable Gigabit Ethernet connectivity along with advanced traffic and bandwidth management and integrated copper cable testing.

Demand for direct Gigabit Ethernet attachment for servers, PCs and workstations is a requirement in today's enterprise network. In addition to higher density, customers also require the tools to manage, control and protect application data. Extreme Networks' next-generation G24T(3) and G16X(3) modules, based on the Triumph chipset, ease the migration to Gigabit Ethernet throughout the network enabling greater performance for convergence, server farms and Gigabit to the desktop applications. The scalable BlackDiamond switch has been a leading solution for the network core. These new modules add compelling solutions for the distribution layer of the network, with higher density for both copper and fiber interfaces. They expand the market for this key platform and protect customer investment.

The two new BlackDiamond modules (G24T(3) with 24-port auto-sensing 10/100/1000 copper ports and G16X(3) with 16 port fiber 10/100/1000 ports), scale up to 360 Gigabit Ethernet connections per BlackDiamond 6816 chassis switch. Triumph chipset technology delivers ingress and egress rate shaping for traffic management on every G16X(3) and G24T(3) port, along with port- based management and flow control for traffic protection.

"Extreme Networks' introduction of higher-density Gigabit Ethernet switching technology helps us in distinct ways," said Eric Walters, network manager for 7-Eleven, Inc., the world's largest convenience retailer. "We protect our investment in the BlackDiamond platform while gaining the best path for migrating our server farms with enhanced Ethernet connectivity, beyond 100Mbps. This is critical for increased data transactions and bandwidth needs that will extend beyond the core of the network."

Industry-leading High Density Gigabit Ethernet Enabled by Triumph Technology Triumph technology is designed to increase BlackDiamond Gigabit Ethernet density by 275 percent while maintaining the performance and line-rate throughput with Layer 3 services required by end users. The G24T(3) and G16X(3) modules maintain line-rate forwarding performance, even while supporting QoS, full Layer 3 routing services, and security services such as ACLs, Intrusion Detection and Network Login. As customers increase the scale of their Gigabit Ethernet networks, the BlackDiamond switch with Triumph technology has the performance to support the applications that demand more Gigabit Ethernet bandwidth.

T-Control Rate Shaping for Advanced Traffic Management

Extreme Networks' T-Control enables detailed traffic management to deliver mission-critical services to receive the network resources they require. With T-Control on the G24T(3) and G16X(3) modules, the BlackDiamond switch can support eight ingress, eight egress queues and one egress super-queue per port so that each port can be individually configured to rate shape traffic with accuracy and flexibility. Traffic can be configured down to 1Kbps increments, giving the network administrator the most accurate control possible for bandwidth utilization. An added benefit of T-Control is the ability to maintain detailed statistics for all in-profile, out-of-profile and dropped traffic on each queue. This statistical data can be used not only to track and control port utilization and application behavior, it can be used for usage based billing.

Integrated Copper Plant Testing

The G24T(3) module also provides integrated copper plant testing, allowing network managers to automatically identify and solve cabling issues on their network. This functionality improves total infrastructure manageability and uptime by integrating physical cable diagnostic capabilities directly into the switch, thereby making it possible to remotely diagnose both Layer 1 (physical) and Layer 2-7 (logical) issues in an integrated and seamless fashion.

"Triumph technology provides customers with the most complete set of tools for increasing performance while adding new levels of flexibility and control to their network," said Timon Sloane, director of product marketing and management for Extreme Networks. "With our third generation technology, Extreme continues to offer innovative networking solutions that offer the lowest total cost of ownership."

The G24T and G16X modules for the BlackDiamond are compatible with existing BlackDiamond 6804, 6808 and 6816 switches. They are interoperable with all current BlackDiamond modules, rewarding customers with the most complete set of Layer 2/3, and Layer 4-7 switching features for bandwidth management, high throughput and simplified operations.
