Sun Introduces Software Products
For Network Security
Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced six new software products that will
deliver
enhanced security in the network computing infrastructure for CIO's, system
administrators and developers. These products offer customers a compelling
total cost of ownership (TCO) and the necessary IT environment of military-
grade security, secure trading, instant messaging and collaboration, and
network management.
"Network computing is only as strong as its weakest link. If the network is
compromised, the customer's entire business can be put at risk," said Jonathan
Schwartz, executive vice president of software at Sun Microsystems, Inc.
"While our competitors have made security flaws a feature, Sun has
consistently made security one of its highest priorities. In fact, we don't
just make security products -- we build security into everything we make."
For the CIO and system administrator, Sun is announcing:
- Trusted Solaris Standard Edition (SPARC and x86): A highly secure
operating system targeting businesses where enhancing privacy, increasing
accountability and reducing security violations are critical business needs,
thus bringing dynamic economics for commercial deployment. Pricing starts at
$999 (U.S. list price).
- Trusted Solaris Certified Edition (SPARC and x86): In addition to the
functionality in the Standard Edition, the Certified Edition is independently
evaluated at EAL4, the internationally recognized criteria for evaluating IT
Security under the Common Criteria Certification scheme, and provides the
highest level of assurance of any commercially available operating system.
Pricing starts at $2,495 (U.S. list price).
"As a leading provider of information-based systems specializing in
mission-
critical national security programs, Veridian relies on Sun's Trusted Solaris
operating system because it is the only UNIX environment that offers the
security levels we require," said Glen Givens, vice president, Trusted
Technologies, Veridian. "Sun's commitment to providing a military-grade secure
operating system is critical to our business and our customers and Sun's
commitment to extend the leading secure UNIX operating system to the x86
platform is welcome news. The x86 platform, along with the equally cost-
effective Sun Blade and SunRay platforms, offer a vast array of options to our
customers."
- N1 Data Platform: This provides storage pooling and consolidation through
virtualization allowing customers to flexibly allocate their existing storage
resources, as well as new systems, on demand, decreasing the need to purchase
unneeded storage capacity and lowering total cost of ownership.
- Sun Management Center 3.5 Software: Allows customers to securely and
simply manage their Sun hardware, Solaris Operating System and applications
while helping to increase service levels and decrease administrative costs in
enterprise computing.
- Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) Integration Server Secure Trading
Agent: This new addition to Sun's secure Web services platform enables
customers to reliably and securely exchange business documents between trading
partners. A B2B solution built on Internet and Web services standards, the
product reduces cost and complexity of traditional Electronic Data Interchange
(EDI) solutions using Value Added Networks (VANs) for message transport. For
example, customers can save up to $75K in monthly charges by eliminating the
need for a VAN. The Sun ONE Integration Server Secure Trading Agent is
available now at a price of $2,000 per host connection.
- Sun ONE Collaborative Business Platform: An integrated and secure
platform for customers, colleagues and others to safely share information via
email, calendar, instant messaging, content creation and other services from
virtually anywhere at anytime and on any device. The Collaborative Business
Platform includes a set of quick-start and deployment professional consulting
services from Sun and industry-leading iForce partners.
- Sun ONE Instant Messaging 6.0 Software: New instant messaging software,
providing businesses with secure, real-time communications, including the
ability to securely capture sensitive information for off-line auditing and
archiving and protect end users and corporate assets via anti-spam and anti-
virus integration capabilities.
- Project Orion: This project aligns Sun's software infrastructure
offerings
into a predictable quarterly release of an integrated and pre-tested software
system distributed on Solaris, Solaris for x86 and Linux. The process
simplifies software lifecycle management and pricing models, thereby helping
customers to easily deploy either a fully pre-integrated software system, or
selected components of the system with less expense and complexity. The
Project Orion release is planned for mid 2003.
For the developer, Sun is announcing:
- Sun ONE Studio 8, Compiler Collection: Provides up to 30 percent improved
compile-time performance, with faster build times and quicker time to
deployment for developers creating portable, native Solaris applications on
SPARC and x86 platforms. The Sun ONE Studio 8, Compiler Collection is
scheduled to be available by the end of May 2003 at a U.S. list price of
$995.00.
Recent Java Web Services highlights that underscore Sun's continued
industry
leadership in the market include:
- In March, the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I) announced
that Mark Hapner, Sun Distinguished Engineer and chief Web services strategist
at Sun, elected to the board of directors, demonstrating broad industry
alignment in the push to establish a set of converged and open standards for
Web services.
- The availability of the Sun ONE Web Services Platform Developer Edition,
the industry's most complete and fully integrated platform for Java Web
Services and application development. For more information visit:

platform. For more information visit: www.jcp.org
