Breaking News - General:

ORIGIX Launches Ethernet Services In Minneapolis

ORIGIX CORP. announced the introduction of GigaNet Ethernet services in Minneapolis, for the first time giving Minnesota businesses access to the fastest, most reliable data communications technology available.

"ORIGIX is the first company in the state to deliver high-speed metro Gigabit Ethernet," President and CEO Doug Ruth explains. "Our GigaNet services define the convergence of IP, data, media streaming and storage for the Twin Cities. The network is simple and very scalable, allowing our customers to increase bandwidth on the fly and eliminate the need for long- term, fixed-pipe contracts."

With speeds of a Gigabit per second (Gbps) and beyond, the firm's new GigaNet service is more than 22 times faster than a DS-3 connection and more than 667 times faster than a T-1 line. At maximum bandwidth, the system can transfer more than a billion bits of data per second.

"ORIGIX GigaNet provides us with a reliable, scalable solution to support our mission critical applications at a cost-effective price," says Glen Kragness, Director of Technology for the Minneapolis-based law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP.

GigaNet is dynamically scalable, which means it's easy to increase or decrease bandwidth in 1 Megabit per second (Mbps) increments with no service interruption. This eliminates the need for businesses to be locked into fixed amounts of IP bandwidth that can be underutilized.

The scalability of GigaNet provides the varying amounts of bandwidth required by Dorsey & Whitney's new document management system, Mr. Kragness explains. Traditional systems can't provision changes in bandwidth that quickly.

"It is a lot of bandwidth for the money," Mr. Kragness adds. GigaNet is more economical because businesses pay only for the bandwidth used and ORIGIX's dedicated optical network eliminates expensive local-loop charges.

GigaNet's point-to-point Ethernet delivers unparalleled connectivity with "latency" (that's the time it takes data to move through the network) of less than 5 milliseconds. That exceptional speed, combined with the virtual local area networks (LANs) and storage area networks (SANs) it creates across metropolitan areas, also makes GigaNet a reliable, cost-effective choice for remote data storage and business continuity services.

ORIGIX's GigaNet network is integrated with its Optimized Network Access Point (ONAP) that ensures optimal routing of IP traffic to multiple Internet networks, providing up to 30 percent greater efficiency for Internet access. ORIGIX leverages Sockeye Network's Global Route 3.0 service to optimize the upstream IP traffic. Whether a business uses a quarter Mbps of bandwidth or a Gigabit of bandwidth, the IP traffic is optimized.

Route optimization was important to Dorsey & Whitney, Mr. Kragness says, because it increases reliability and reduces the firm's need to contract with multiple IP carriers.

Riverstone Networks Inc. and ORIGIX began to architect the Gigabit Ethernet network in early 2002. ORIGX has deployed Riverstone's RS 3000 and RS 38000 Gigabit Routers to "light" its fiber terminations in selected downtown Minneapolis buildings.
