Breaking News - Operating Systems & Middleware:

Sun Leaves Its Own Linux, Supports Other Vendors

Sun Micro has decided to walk away form its own brand of linux in order to support its distribution by other companies. Sun suggested that customers don't want another version of Linux when more than enough were available right now.

Linux distributors like Red Hat and UnitedLinux are now likely to be supported by sun.

Sun said that one reason for removing its own version of Linux is that "people are writing to a distribution, not to Linux".

Sun is also working on interoperability between Sun Solaris and Linux applications.

The vendor is committed to getting Linux applications running on Solaris without modification as part of its Project Orion initiative, which pulls Sun software together under one umbrella.
