Storage:
Xiran's DirectPath Bridges Storage
And Networks
Xiran, a division of SimpleTech focused on developing content delivery
acceleration solutions, now offers the first of a family of cost effective,
high performance single-board full duplex LAN-to-SAN bridges designed to
dramatically enhance throughput between fibre channel storage and gigabit
Ethernet LANs.
Designated DirectPath DPA-1300 Accelerators, these single slot PCI boards
are
the most highly integrated LAN-to-SAN bridges available on the market. They
are powered by Xiran's proprietary DirectPath Engine silicon with a complete
complement of TCP/IP, UDP/IP and iSCSI firmware to offload all protocol
processing and data transfer chores from a server. On-board cache buffers of
up to 4 GB, a complete 1000Base-T network interface, and two 2-Mbps fibre
channel host bus adaptor ports are included, to provide the industry's first
complete single-board storage to network bridge solution with on-board
cache.
"Our new DirectPath DPA-1300 Accelerators assures gigabit-per-second wire-
speed network to storage throughput or serverwidth for PCI-based servers now
on the market," said Jeanclaude Toma, vice president for marketing and
business development for Xiran. "Thanks to its high degree of integration, a
single DirectPath DPA-1300 Accelerator can be used to replace four system
cards -- including a gigE NIC, TCP/IP/iSCSI processor, fibrechannel HBA and
memory. This is good news for makers of slot-constrained 1U and 2U servers,
and even allows high-end enterprise class servers to add multiple boards to
maximize LAN-to-SAN connectivity in a single chassis. We expect DirectPath
DPA-1300 Accelerators to provide ideal solutions for OEMs serving high growth
markets for networked storage devices and high performance servers in the
streaming media, video-on-demand, and LAN-to-SAN storage gateway markets."
DPA-1300 Accelerators support Raid 0+1, Linux kernel 2.4.17, and Windows NT
and 2000drives. Downloadable firmware is available for accelerating streaming
media, video-on-demand and storage protocols including MMS, RTD, RTP, RTSP,
HTTP, TCP/IP, UDP, MPEG over IP, iSCSI and FCIP. Optional Helix Universal
Server software from RealNetworks can also be bundled.
Prices for Xiran DirectPath DPA-1300 Accelerator boards begin at $2,500 in
low
volume. Evaluation units will be available in May 2003, with volume deliveries
scheduled to commence in July. The Xiran DirectPath DPA-1300 Accelerator will
be demonstrated publicly for the first time at the company's Booth #SL3126 at
the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show in Las Vegas from
April 7 to 10, 2003. Several other versions of the product optimized for
video-on-demand and other bandwidth intensive applications are planned for the
near future.
About Xiran
Xiran, a division of SimpleTech, is a technology leader in developing
advanced
solutions for accelerating content delivery by servers between storage and
networks at wire speeds. Located in Irvine, California, the company combines
proprietary hardware, firmware and software to implement its DirectPath family
of products and systems. These are aimed at improving Serverwidth and
performance in several high growth markets ranging from streaming media and
video-on-demand to emerging enterprise applications involving storage area
networks.
