Breaking News - Storage:

Astute Networks Kit To Help Build Intelligent Storage

Astute Networks, an industry leader in silicon-based storage technologies, announced the availability of its Pericles Hardware Development Kit (HDK). The HDK is a modular system built around Pericles, the market's leading Intelligent Storage Processor, and includes a selection of daughter cards connected via high-speed SPI-4.2 connectors. The HDK's architecture also allows designers to quickly build application-specific daughter cards that can be used in early prototypes for software development and testing, resulting in faster time-to-market for OEMs. Storage OEMs can now build the highest performance intelligent storage systems incorporating advanced management services such as storage pooling, data migration, replication, backup, and disaster recovery management. A single Pericles can achieve an aggregate, full duplex throughput greater than 10 Gbps, providing the ability to build high port density blades or systems with a single device.

The HDK enables system architects and engineers to quickly and efficiently port, execute, and verify application software for the Pericles Intelligent Storage Processor. For use by hardware, firmware and application engineers, the HDK seamlessly integrates with the Pericles Software Development Kit (SDK) and its simulation environment that was introduced early last year. This integration provides a seamless path, which allows the exact firmware code developed in the simulation environment to be used for hardware prototype development. Furthermore, the same programs used in the SDK can also be used in the HDK, leveraging development efforts for both environments.

"With the HDK, we are providing a unique and comprehensive development platform to our storage OEMs," said Allyn Pon, vice president of customer marketing. "We are shipping all the essential ingredients; silicon, SDK, production-tested storage protocol software, and the HDK to storage device developers so they can aggressively develop systems to meet the exploding demand for advanced storage services residing on SAN switches, disk arrays and SAN appliances."

About the Pericles Intelligent Storage Processor.

Combining parallel processor architecture with embedded hardware acceleration engines for handling stateful protocols, Pericles leads the field in storage processor performance with an aggregate, full duplex bandwidth greater than 10 Gbps. The hardware engines not only accelerate any storage protocol but also speed up functions used to support virtualization; including synchronous and asynchronous mirroring, data migration, replication, backup, snapshot, failover, and real time traffic monitoring. Dual SPI-4.2 ports allow traffic to flow through the network to a switching fabric, a key requirement for blades or platforms.

Astute's OEM customers include manufacturers of intelligent SAN switches, virtualization platforms, iSCSI gateways, FCIP gateways, storage networking devices, multi-protocol SAN switches, and storage disk arrays. In addition to SAN infrastructure systems, Pericles can also be used for other intelligent networking applications including intrusion detection systems, Layer 7 switches, server load balancing, blade server systems, stateful firewalls, and SSL acceleration platforms.
