Breaking News - Storage:

Scale8 Unveils Advanced NAS System

Scale8 Inc. announced the N2200 network-attached storage (NAS) system, a high- capacity file storage system with exceptional economics. Combining Scale8's Distributed Storage Software (DSS) technology with off-the-shelf components, the N2200 brings the simplicity of NAS systems to customers requiring access to terabytes of data.

"Reference data, or fixed content, will represent more than half of all the digitized data on the planet by 2006. The growth rate for this type of content is in excess of 90 percent annually," said Steve Duplessie, senior analyst with the Enterprise Storage Group. "The product criteria for success with this dynamic is pretty straightforward -- users need cheap, really smart storage that is effectively a plug it and forget it device. Scale8 has figured this out and can make waves in this growing market."

"Truly distributed systems like ours have the power to solve critical customer problems," said Bo Ewald, chairman and CEO, Scale8. "The N2200 addresses specific customer needs to expand capacity online while retaining high availability and lowering storage costs."

About the Scale8 N2200 NAS System

The N2200 is a high capacity NAS system that delivers the following customer benefits:

  • Seamless Expansion: N2200 NAS Systems can be modularly expanded from 6 - 108 terabytes without system downtime, enabled by Scale8's unique Distributed Logical Volume Manager (DLVM) technology.
  • Easy Integration and Implementation: N2200 NAS Systems use standard NFS protocols and require no third-party software. In addition, management is simplified as compared to traditional NAS systems, since up to 108 terabytes can be managed as one virtual storage system.
  • High Availability: N2200 NAS Systems provide resiliency for multiple disk failures within and between nodes, enabled by Scale8's unique Dual Data Protection capability.
  • Cost Efficiency: N2200 NAS Systems provide exceptional economics, enabled by off-the-shelf components and high-density disk drives. In addition, simplified management of a large-scale NAS system provides low overall total cost of ownership.

Details, Pricing and Availability

The N2200 will be generally available in March 2003. Pricing for a base configuration of 6 terabytes starts at $105,000. Pricing for a 12 terabyte configuration starts at $145,000.
