Juniper Networks Makes 17 Additional Network Deployments
Juniper Networks, Inc. announced that an additional 17 European Research
and
Education networks are deploying Juniper Networks equipment to provide
advanced IP services to the research and academic community. In total more
than 40 European R&E networks are now relying on Juniper Networks
technology.
As a result, the R&E organizations can implement applications demanding
high
bandwidth and Quality of Service (QOS). Such applications include distributed
computing (GRID computing), real-time shared imaging (medical and astronomic
imaging), educational broadcasts, and multicast videoconferencing.
The European R&E network community is composed of multiple levels: a pan-
European network, various national, regional and metropolitan area networks
(MANs), as well as the community research lab and university networks.
Juniper Networks has been successful at all three levels. To date, the
following European R&E organizations are benefiting from Juniper Networks
solutions:
GEANT (Dante), the pan-European network connecting over 30 national
networks;
R&E national networks such as RedIRIS in Spain, ARNES in Slovenia, Funet in
Finland, HEAnet in Ireland, and VTHD in France;
MANs and regional networks such as CYFRONET in Poland, LGFL (London Grid
for
Learning) in the UK, RAP (Réseau Académique Parisien) network in France, Pisa
University's MAN in Italy, and RECETGA (Rede de Ciencia e Tecnoloxía de
Galicia) in Spain;
Research labs and universities such as CNR and Pisa University in Italy;
Frankfurt and Erlangen Universities in Germany; Juan Carlos, Politécnica de
Madrid, Politècnica de Catalunya, and Navarra Universities in Spain; IMAG, and
GET (Groupement des Ecoles de Télécoms) in France; Warsaw University in
Poland; as well as the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research),
based in Geneva.
All of these networks use Juniper Networks M- and/or T-series routing
platforms. Thanks to purpose-built hardware and JUNOS Internet operating
software, these platforms enable reliable, secure and high performance IP
services. This purpose-built architecture also allows these R&E organizations
to simultaneously run IPv6 and IPv4 on the same routers, and deploy services
such as IP Multicast, Quality of Service (QoS), and Layer 2 MPLS VPNs, without
compromising the performance of the network.
"The Juniper platforms provide us with an infrastructure that can run
multiple
services at line speed thanks to the clear separation of routing and packet
processing in the Juniper Networks architecture, allowing us to experiment
with different classes of service on our network without loss of performance.
The same version of the JUNOS operating software runs across all M- and T-
series platforms to provide a stable infrastructure with high availability.
With over 3000 R&E organizations relying on our network, this is of vital
importance," said Dai Davies, general manager at Dante.
