EXPERTS TO DEBATE GRID COMP'G HYPE
VS REALITY
A panel addressing "The State of the Grid: Hype Versus Reality" will be
held at the Global Grid Forum 7 (GGF7) in Tokyo, Japan on March 5. This
roundtable, the first of its kind to tackle what is perhaps the single most
challenging question facing the Grid community today, will consist of a roster
of luminaries never before brought together in one discussion venue.
The panel will be moderated by Tom Tabor, publisher of GRIDtoday and
HPCwire.
Invited participants, their affiliations, and areas of expertise
include:
- Paul Messina, Distinguished Senior Computer Scientist, Argonne
National
Laboratory, senior advisor on computing to the Director General of CERN,
Geneva, Switzerland - why the US may spend $1B/yr on cyberinfrastructure and
the grid.
- Tony Hey, Professor of Computation, Head of the Department of Electronics
and Computer Science & Dean of Engineering and Applied Science, University of
Southampton - EU and UK Grid progress and future development.
- Kyriakos Baxevanidis, Grid Project Manager for the European Union's IST
programme - EU Grid progress and funding results.
- Charlie Catlett, Senior Fellow, Computation Institute and Mathematics and
Computer Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory; Chair, Global Grid
Forum (GGF) - how GGF is becoming the focal point for convergence and
standards in the community as well as bringing harmony to industry and public
sector, markets and research.
- Tom Hawk, IBM Grid Computing General Manager - IBM market surveys of Grid
tech viability.
- Ian Baird, Chief Business Architect & Corporate Grid Strategist, Platform
Computing Inc., Steering Committee Board Member, Global Grid Forum (GGF) -
With over 15 major Grid deployments in 2002 alone, at enterprises such as
Bristol-Myers Squibb, JPMorgan Chase, and the DOE's ASCI Q, Platform's broad
experience gives it a unique perspective on both the technical and non-
technical barriers to market acceptance of Grid computing, and how these can
be overcome.
- Andrew Grimshaw, Founder and CTO, Avaki - standards convergence.
The importance of this panel has been noted by Tom Tabor, who asserted: "A
lot of concern has been voiced about Grids as they are hyped in mainstream
media versus their operational reality. These panelists will paint an accurate
picture of how Grids actually function today."
Charlie Catlett characterized the genesis of the panel by saying: "As the
premier organization for representing the Grid community as a whole, the GGF
is very sensitive to the inordinate level of hype surrounding Grids. Thus, it
was vital that we organize a panel of internationally respected authorities to
lend clarity to the situation."
This discussion is designed enlighten both technologists and enterprise
managers. The overall theme of GGF7 is "Grids Around the World;" for more
