Systems/Enterprise:
SOLID AND MontaVista SURVEY
HIGHLIGHTS GLOBAL IT NEEDS
Solid Information Technology Corp, a leading grid distributed data
management
provider, and MontaVista Software Inc, a company powering the embedded
revolution, announced the results of a survey on telecom/IT professionals'
needs in the areas of highly available network architecture, grid application
development, and database management.
The joint survey targeted product managers, database administrators,
application designers, and software engineers, as well as senior management
positions in industries such as telecom, healthcare, biotech, publishing, and
financial services.

"The results of this survey enunciate IT and telecom experts' need to
ensure
five nines service availability to their customers by a 10 to 1 margin,"
explained Jussi Harvela, president and CEO, Solid. "And the desire for high
availability isn't exclusive to the United States; professionals in over 25
countries and across all industries articulated that same desire. The
responses point to the acute pain companies are facing as they attempt to
negotiate the challenge of reliably providing a highly available network."
The survey responses came from 111 professionals involved in more than 15
industries; more than 65 percent of responses came from the financial
services, healthcare, manufacturing, telecom, insurance industries, and
government. Forty percent of the respondents represented more than 25
European, Middle Eastern, and African countries, while the remaining 60
percent were from the U.S. Seventy percent of the respondents operate a
Microsoft Windows operating system; the remaining 30 percent was split among
Linux, Sun Solaris, and Unix.
Survey Highlights
The survey covered an array of issues relating to high availability,
embedded
database needs, and the importance of scalable software/hardware platforms
that map to a company's business objectives.
- 90 percent of the survey respondents agree that it is important or
extremely important for software and hardware platforms to be scalable in
order to meet their companies' objectives.
- 88 percent felt that a highly available database/database manager is
critical in providing five nines availability.
- 86 percent indicated that providing five nines service availability to
customers is important or extremely important.
- 82 percent thought that it is extremely important for a SQL database
manager to store system data in network elements.
- 82 percent agreed that broad database platform support from a database
manager is very important.
- 56 percent felt that an embeddable database was very important to their
network infrastructure products.
The survey results suggest several trends. Respondents agreed that the most
crucial areas of their business include shorter development cycles, decreased
development costs, decrease in the time to market for new products and
offerings, and more reliable products. Just over 45 percent of the respondents
estimated their company's spending toward the development of network
infrastructure products will increase from 5-25 percent over the next 1-2
years.
"The results of this survey are exciting. The survey points to the
universal
concerns telecom and IT experts share regarding which strategies and
technologies will support their business goals," said John Lehmann, director,
business development, MontaVista Software.
"Our partnership with Solid to provide highly available network solutions
in a
wide variety of applications speaks to the real needs of the industry right
now."
