LIFE SCIENCES GGF7: AN INTERVIEW WITH FARAZDEL, ARZBERGER
By Neil Alger, GRIDtoday
At GGF7 in Tokyo next month, the Life Sciences Grid Research Group (LSG-RG) is hosting a symposium entitled "Life Sciences Applications on the Grid."

GLOBAL GRID FORUM (GGF7)TO BE HELD IN TOKYO -- MARCH 4-7
With the theme "Grids Around the World," this GGF will update attendees on the current global state of Grids and Grid research as well as where the future of Grids is focused.

ENVISIONING THE GRID
By Paul Preuss
The Grid integrates all sorts of devices, services, and resources, not just computers. Operating inside a specialized world of research, the Grid hopes to do for the tools of science, from computers and data-storage systems to instruments like telescopes, electron microscopes, seismographs, synchrotron beam lines -- even ocean-going floats that report via satellite -- what the World Wide Web did for desktop PCs.

MAGMASOFT GRID CLUSTER DELIVERS RESULTS AT 1/2 THE PRICE
Linux Networx, a Linux Grid Cluster Supercomputer provider and MAGMA, a producer of flow simulation software, joined efforts to produce the Evolocity MAGMASOFT Grid Cluster that reduced Nemak's casting simulation time from 10.1 days, to just 8.5 hours -- a 29-fold improvement in speed.

SUN POWERS THE BLUEPRINT INITIATIVE WITH GRID CLUSTERS
The Blueprint Initiative has acquired more than $5 million in Sun hardware, software and storage to support BIND and related bionformatics tools.

DATASYNAPSE GOING FOR THE GRID
DataSynapse Inc, the application enabling software for Grid, "on-demand" and utility computing infrastructure, released its 2002 results and company milestones.

ENTROPIA'S DCGRID SELECTED BY LARGE HEALTH CARE COMPANIES
With an ever-increasing appetite for compute power in R&D centers, PC Grids will have immediate impact for executing computationally intensive applications and offer an on-demand resource.

Intel

Systems/Enterprise

NEW HP ARCHITECTURE PROVIDES FOR SECURE GRID NETWORKS
HP ProCurve Networking introduced a comprehensive Grid enterprise planning and design infrastructure that enables companies to build secure, mobile, multi-service networks.

GRID ENABLES CYCLONE DEVICES MOVE TO PRODUCTION FASTER
Originally targeted for March, a move to volume production is a result of significant engineering accomplishments driven by the success of TSMC's robust and proven 0.13-micron process technology, and Altera's new 24/7 test methodology.

KEY RESEARCH SECURES $12.5M IN FUNDING FOR GRID CLUSTERS
Key Research has a new, innovative approach to building high-performance servers, specifically designed for larger Grid Cluster users who are concerned about the economics of server computing.

SISTINA'S SECURES $10 MILLION; LEADS IN GRID STORAGE
The funding will allow Sistina to enhance its business operations, plus market new enterprise products, such as the first Grid Cluster File System Solution for IBM Linux mainframes.

AMD ATHLON MP 2600+ BRINGS INCREASED GRID CLUSTER SUPPORT
AMD introduced the Athlon MP processor 2600+, the newest in its line of multiprocessors for servers and workstations that run mission-critical business applications.

SUN'S iForce PAVING THE WAY INTO THE GRID MARKET
Sun has garnered extensive iForce partner support as the first Grid Blade Server vendor to have more than 20 partners' products available for its new Sun Fire Grid Platform.

HYPERION & PINNACLE ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP
To become a gold member of the Hyperion Partner Program, Pinnacle met Hyperion's rigorous evaluation criteria including a consultant certification process, joint customer interviews and critique of the Company's implementation methodology.

Scientific Applications

NETWORK ASSOCIATES UNVEILS "BLACK BOX" FOR GRID NETWORKS
A network with such a black box would have, for example, helped to prevent the spread of the recent SQL Slammer worm, which nearly shut down Web access in South Korea, shut down automatic teller machines, and paralyzed corporate networks.

jaalaM AND INTERNET 2 WORK TOGETHER IN GRID NETWORK TESTS
Further demonstrating its commitment to collaborative technology development, jaalaM is a member of the Internet 2 consortium, working to develop and deploy advanced networking Grid applications and technologies.

CISCO JOINS EPRI TO IMPROVE GRID ELECTRICITY SYSTEMS
The smart Grid will utilize sophisticated communications and computing technologies to deliver highly reliable power over a system that is secure from hackers or terrorists.

CAL-(IT)2 & SDSC BRING GRID CAPABILITIES TO STUDENTS
The center will be hooked up to a high-performance Grid that will permit students to interact with university faculty and graduate students and work collaboratively with them on research projects.

CALIENT & CAL-(IT)2 COLLOBARATE ON GRID OPTICAL NETWORK
Calient Networks will team with Cal-(IT)2 and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) on development of the OptIPuter -- a powerful Grid Distributed cyber-infrastructure project designed to support data-intensive scientific research and collaboration.

SDSC SELECTED AS NATIONAL INTERNET 2 TECH EVALUATION CENTER
The mission of the center will be to test and evaluate leading-edge technologies for high-performance Grid and Internet 2 networks working with developers to test and refine network hardware and software for optimal end-to-end network performance up to 10 gigabits per second.

PROJECT SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND GRIDS OF EMBEDDED COMPUTERS
More and more, embedded computers are becoming the brains behind mechanisms that we rely on throughout our everyday lives -- wireless devices, cars, automated elevators, climate control systems, etc.
