Special Features:
RELEASE OF SUN'S CODE WILL MAKE
GRID INTEGRATION EASIER
The open-source community can now look to implement many options that were
not
possible prior to Sun Microsystem's decision to part with its grid portal
technology.
Users will now access applications via the Web or from a remote location
with
the help of Sun's grid engine portal. In fact, any additional jobs-uploading,
downloading and even monitoring activities over the grid-will now be as easy
as a single stroke of the keyboard.
Because of this technology, Sun officials feel that users can be assured
that their access will not only be secure, they will now have the ability
to remotely get whatever they need from their local network, enterprise or
grid, without having to be tied into that particular network.
One of the few to benefit from Sun's decision is The Ohio Supercomputer
Center that has been using Sun's Grid Engine to help students and
scientists get a feeling of the Grid without having to learn complicated
software commands. The Deputy Director of the Center claims that, in many
situations, scientistis have reduced the time consumed on projects to mere
hours instead of days or weeks.
Sun's Grid Computing Strategy Is Detailed Below:
- Management software Sun ONE Grid Engine 5.3
- Sun ONE Grid Engine
- Enterprise Edition Sun Management Center
- HighGround Storage Resource Manager Development tools
- Sun Management Center
- Developer Environment: Forte HPC -- C/C++ and Sun HPC Grid
ClusterTools
- Infrastructure Sun ONE Portal
- Directory And Messaging Servers Security
- SunScreen Firewall
- Enterprise Authentication Mechanism and Trusted Solaris
Sun bought Gridware Inc in 2000 becuase Grid computing has become a key
piece
of Sun's ambitious N1 initiative. This initiative became an important part of
the ROI vision that Sun contemplated while considering how to take all the
advantage of data center harware that looses productivity due to lack of
foresight. Sun has calculated that there are nearly 7,000 grids in the
computing community using Sun's software and harwarte.
Sun has already released the code in December, 2002. They will release
their
technology's integration code to the open-source Grid Engine Project.
In addition, end-users will have additional access to grids powered
by the company's Grid Engine software.
The big push behind the release of these codes is to help industry see a
faster ROI by lower the costs -- especially in the case of call centers that
run
24X7.
