DILITHIUM COLLABORATES WITH TI FOR CONNECTING GRID NETWORKS

Dilithium Networks announced that it is collaborating with Texas Instruments to jointly provide advanced transcoding solutions to enable seamless, real-time multimedia communications between circuit, packet and wireless networks. These transcoding solutions will enable the delivery of cost-effective rich media communications across networks operating under different protocol standards. Through its collaboration, TI and Dilithium Networks will reduce time to market for transcoding solutions based on Dilithium's patent-pending Unicoding technology.

Unicoding is a breakthrough in signal processing technology that transcodes in real time and on the fly between voice and video standards. Instead of the normal tandem voice transcoding approach, which involves complete decode to pulse code modulation (PCM), the Dilithium Unicoding solution directly converts between voice standards in the code space and therefore not only reduces the computational workload but also reduces the algorithmic delay incurred in tandem transcoding. This results in a higher channel density per digital signal processor (DSP).

Dilithium Networks' Unicoding technology is currently available on TI's TMS320C6000 devices and is suitable for a broad range of products including Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) gateways, multimedia gateways, mobile switching centers, international trunking gateways, and video mail applications.

"Dilithium Networks' Unicoding technology dramatically reduces the processing power and memory required to do transcoding between common voice and video standards while maintaining a high level of quality," said Brian Glinsman, executive director, infrastructure solutions at Texas Instruments. "This is a unique technology that will have a big impact on driving down the cost for multimedia services."

Dilithium Networks recently announced the world's first wireless multimedia gateway on a compact-PCI platform using TI DSPs. Dr. Marwan Jabri, CTO of Dilithium Networks said, "TI's high performance DSPs provide the performance and memory resources that are essential for developing high density transcoding solutions. That is why Dilithium chose TI DSPs for our Unicoding solutions."

Transcoders available from Dilithium Networks include GSM-AMR to/from G.723.1 and GSM-AMR to/from G.729 for voice and H.263 to/from MPEG4 for video. A number of transcoders based on EVRC, SMV, QCELP, AMR-WB will be available in the coming months.
