IDT Delivers First Search Engine
With Interface To Networks
IDT (Integrated Device Technology Inc), a leading communications IC company
and the leading provider of network search engines (NSEs), announced sampling
of the industry's first NSE with an integrated Network Processor Forum (NPF)
Look-Aside Interface (LA-1) that delivers the industry's highest performance
at an unprecedented 250 MHz.
The new IDT device enables a seamless connection to the network processor
unit
(NPU), allowing significant conservation of board space and enabling designers
to begin development without costly or performance-limiting field-programmable
gate array (FPGA) or application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) glue
logic. This NSE, the latest addition to the IDT family of IP co-processors,
accelerates packet processing in products such as core, edge, metro and access
routers and offloads the network processor to assist wire-speed implementation
of access control lists (ACL), longest prefix match (LPM) and quality of
service (QoS).
The new IDT NSE offers an electrical and architectural fit with high-speed
NPUs and is compliant with the approved NPF specification for the LA-1
Standard. Through its working relationship with Intel, IDT has developed a
complete solution for the Intel(R) IXP2800 and IXP2400 network processors that
enable rich OC-192 classification and forwarding with up to four lookups per
packet. IDT is a member of the Intel(R) Internet Exchange Architecture (IXA)
Developer Network.
"Our work with IDT has resulted in an effective and efficient interface
between our IXP2400 and IXP2800 family of network processors and the IDT NSE,"
said Nick Finamore, general manager of Intel's Network Processor Division.
"This provides our customers a robust hardware and software development
environment for accelerating classification and packet processing at up to
OC-192 data rates."
The IDT NSE includes a set of Dynamic Database Management features and
sophisticated instruction capabilities that result in an up to 70 percent
power savings when compared to alternative solutions. Additionally, the
ability to offload searching tasks from the network processor provides extra
headroom, permitting the network processor to provide value-added
revenue-generating services such as traffic management, security and
accounting.
IDT Delivers Complete Design Accelerator Kit for its Network Search Engine
with LA-1 Interface
IDT also offers a complete design accelerator kit, including a full suite
of software and hardware development tools. This complete solution speeds time
to market, reduces development costs, and increases overall system
performance. The IDT software development kit (SDK) includes a cycle- and
data-accurate system level architecture model (SLAM) that allows designers to
fully evaluate and test packet-processing solutions in a complete pre-hardware
simulation environment.
Designers also have available complete application library support and
data-plane macros, as well as tools that help evaluate power consumption, bus
utilization and system performance. Designers' systems are further accelerated
to market through the availability of the IDT suite of hardware development
tools, including a reference board that supports the Intel IXDP2400
development platform.
"Our LA-1 compliant NSE integrates the equivalent of more than $150 of
surrounding glue logic and improves architectural efficiency, delivering an
unparalleled reduction in cost, power, board space and chip count, while
doubling overall search performance. We've received very positive results on
this device and have been sampling it to multiple Tier 1 customers since last
year," said Chris Schott, vice president of the IDT IP co-processor division.
"We are pleased to have collaborated so closely with Intel to develop this
breakthrough device that addresses the requirements of our mutual
customers."

IDT IP Co-Processor Solutions
The Company offers IP co-processor solutions that consist of network
search engines and classification and content inspection processors, and is
the recognized industry leader in both these areas.
Based on the integration of content addressable memory (CAM) and
high-performance logic, the IDT NSEs support NPUs and ASICs to accelerate
packet
classification and forwarding in core, metro and access networks.
The IDT classification and content inspection processors are capable of
filtering and parsing data up to Layer 7, a functionality that, when coupled
with its NSEs, allows for inspection of content in both the packet header and
payload, resulting in more intelligent packet processing at wire speed.
IDT is an active member and contributor to NPF and the LA interface
definition. IDT is an NPF Board member and serves as chairman of the
board.
