Systems/Enterprise:
BMC OFFERS SOLUTION FOR GRID
SERVERS
BMC Software Inc, a leader in distributed enterprise management, announced
that it has completed the delivery of its PATROL (version 7) infrastructure --
the foundation for PATROL products -- with the delivery of the new PATROL
Central Windows and Web management consoles and Distribution Server. Each new
console (PATROL Central Operator -- Microsoft Windows Edition and PATROL
Central Operator -- Web Edition) provides a centralized view of managed
environments, such as applications, databases and operating systems, which
reduces operational complexity and costs, and enhances ease-of-use.
The Distribution Server centralizes product distribution, simplifies
product
configuration, and reduces overall costs related to product upgrades. The
Distribution Server, which is the final component of PATROL 7, became
generally available in December 2002.
The PATROL (version 7) infrastructure delivers a common architecture in
which
new PATROL solutions can be easily added, protecting customers' investments in
their PATROL environment while increasing business value. The advanced PATROL
architecture reduces systems management costs through an easier deployment,
reduces complexity with common communications, and improves service through a
consolidated enterprise console with PATROL Central. With the delivery of the
enhanced PATROL architecture, BMC Software builds on PATROL's existing
strengths while enhancing security, scalability and flexibility.
"With the implementation of BMC's PATROL, I believe that our business and
IT
customers are empowered by a set of powerful tools that are feature rich and
extremely scalable," said Katie Scully, manager, Enterprise Management
Services, The Men's Wearhouse, one of North America's largest retailers of
men's apparel, who has implemented the PATROL 7 Windows and Web Consoles in a
test environment. "PATROL addresses the need for the system administrators to
effectively manage their system resources in a proactive instead of reactive
manner. For an e-commerce Web site, the most important thing is to ensure the
system is up and running. If our system is down at the wrong time, it affects
our business' bottom line revenue. PATROL enables us to keep our IT
infrastructure operating at an optimum level and helps us do a better job
managing our resources."
PATROL Consoles Provide Centralized Views, Reducing Costs and
Complexity
To further simplify management of the PATROL environment, the new consoles
--
PATROL Central Operator -- Microsoft Windows Edition and PATROL Central
Operator -- Web Edition -- provide centralized management of user
administration including the ability to assign user rights and privileges as
well as the ability to centrally control security and authentication. The
consoles provide a highly usable, flexible interface that enables customers to
harness the wealth of information provided by PATROL across the breadth of
applications, systems, networks, and databases it supports.
PATROL Central Operator -- Web Edition enables companies to access PATROL
via
a standard Web browser requiring no need for additional software installation.
Through PATROL Central Operator -- Web Edition, customers can share
information between consoles both at work and remotely from any location
around the world. PATROL Central Operator -- Microsoft Windows Edition
delivers access to IT management information in a format that integrates
seamlessly with Microsoft applications and enables PATROL users to fully
exploit the familiar Windows interface using drag and drop capabilities in
designing navigation message panes, toolbars and other menu items.
Additionally, with PATROL Central, customers can easily extend their console
functionality through additional modules, providing an enterprise view with a
consistent look and feel that matches their current Web and Windows
environments. The console modules are provided as BMC Software management
applications or through its extensive partnership program.
"We understand that customers need to improve their competitive position
even
with lower IT budgets and fewer trained staff," said Mary Smars, vice
president, product management and development, PATROL, BMC Software. "BMC
Software has delivered a world-class architecture for its PATROL products with
PATROL 7 that optimizes our customers' investment with PATROL, enabling them
to work more effectively. The delivery of PATROL 7 enables customers to begin
focusing on adopting a business service management perspective by
consolidating the management of the various technology components of their IT
infrastructure. Through this consolidation, they can better understand how
their IT systems affect the services they are delivering."
Distribution Server Centralizes Software Maintenance
Change is inevitable in today's IT environments, and BMC Software's
Distribution Server provides a centralized way of administering and deploying
BMC Software distributed systems products, enabling companies to respond more
quickly to changes in their business environment. The Distribution Server
reduces the cost of software deployment for the customer and improves the time
to value of the BMC Software solutions. The Distribution Server shortens the
overall distribution time and requires minimal knowledge of BMC Software
products in order to install and upgrade the solutions. This results in faster
time-to-value, simplified operational maintenance, and lower costs for
customers. The Distribution Server offers the ability:
- To install and uninstall products on remote systems from one central
location
- To distribute multiple products to multiple systems in parallel
- To create heterogeneous distributions of Window and Unix products
- To schedule a distribution for a specific date and time and to initiate a
"Smart Recovery" if the process is disrupted
- To view reports that check distribution status, gather distribution
history, and view success, failure information
Today's product releases complete BMC Software's phased delivery of PATROL
7
components, with each delivery offering key new technologies that ensure
ongoing interoperability and investment protection. BMC Software announced
enhancements in March 2002 that included an updated agent along with
simplified installation, enhanced security to meet the most stringent
requirements and support for the latest vendor platforms.
