JAPAN'S GRID SYSTEM SENDS RECORD-SPEED DATA TO US
- Integrating seven PC grid clusters located both in the U.S. and Japan,
separated by a distance of over 10,000 kilometers, and then using a single
application to send large volumes of data via multiple TCP (Transmission
Control Protocol) streams across the Pacific Ocean has never been done
before, according to AIST.

BELGIAN HEALTH INSURANCE IMPLEMENTS HEALTHCARE GRID
- This is a significant organization, handling health care refunds for 16%
of the population, managing transactions with a total of 250 hospitals
through seven regional, independent offices that also run the 750 insurance
claims offices throughout Belgium.
-
WIDE AREA GRID MAKES EFFICIENT USE OF AVAILABLE BANDWIDTH
- The High-Performance Bandwidth Challenge awards announced last week at
SC2002 established new records for network performance, with one winning
application demonstrating a five-fold increase over the previous top-mark
set last year.

Quote Of The Week
"From
a hardware perspective a Grid is a collection of
distributed resources connected by a network, possibly at
different sites and in different organizations. Those resources
may include terascale supercomputers, instruments such as
telescopes and microscopes, computer-controlled factory floor
tools, mid-level servers, desktop machines, laptops, PDA's, and
even someday devices such as video cameras, cell phones, and
kitchen appliances." -- Dr. Andrew S. Grimshaw,
Professor of Computer Science, University of Virginia, Founder and CTO of Avaki
