Special Features

WHAT IS OUR GRID?
By Henry E. Schaffer, PhD, North Carolina State University
Our grid comprises, and will continue to comprise, a heterogeneous set of compute and storage resources, schedulers, file systems, and security policies integrated with grid middleware into a distributed computing platform.

GRID COMPUTING OR MODULAR COMPUTING
By Paul Krill, Editor at Large, InfoWorld
Call it grid computing. Or modular computing. Or policy-based computing or utility computing. Intel, which is opting for the modular designation, is preaching distribution of processing power to boost performance and reliability.

GRID IS HERE; WHERE'S THE WEB?
By Shane Kite, Senior Staff Reporter, Securities Data Publishing
The real advantage of grid computing is its ability to free up a firm's IT resources for application development and customer service, in addition to enhancing internal efficiencies and computing management. Trading-critical analytics and risk management are two major areas for distributed computing.

OpenHSF INITIATIVE - A VISUALIZATION FORMAT FOR THE GRID?
The OpenHSF Initiative was launched to establish an open, common visualization format for the efficient exchange of rich 2D/3D data between disparate applications. The OpenHSF Initiative hopes to build a stronger relationship with industry vendors and to establish an even greater involvement in the promotion of this powerful, ubiquitous standard that ultimately may be part of the Grid.

FIRST SITES ON NEESgrid NOW UP AND RUNNING
Called NEESgrid, this infrastructure will soon link earthquake engineering sites across the country, provide data storage facilities and repositories, and offer access to high-performance computing applications used for conducting simulations.
