A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ON THE QUESTION OF WHAT IS A GRID?
William E. Johnston, Senior Scientist, LBNL
For a significant segment of the Grid community, most of whom are represented at the Global Grid Forum, the primary significance of Grids is that they will provide a persistent and uniform infrastructure for solving complex science and eCommerce problems based on a dynamic and distributed set of resources.

FAILURE TO RECOGNIZE STRATEGIC VALUE OF IT CHOKES SPENDING
By William Fellows, the451.com
"I have wanted computing on demand for more than two years now and haven't been able to buy it," says Pat Leach, CIO of pharmaceutical company Inpharmatica. Leach's incumbent supplier is Sun Microsystems, and he has over 500 servers and 25TB of storage.

GRID COMPUTING AIMS TO HARNESS CLUSTERS
This emerging type of computing format lets companies tap into more computing power at a low cost by sharing resources among a company's many departments, or even among companies. Grid computing uses clusters of personal computers, servers or other machines.

NSF SIGNS THREE YEAR AGREEMENT WITH NLANR & MNA GROUPS
The National Science Foundation (NSF) will provide $3.28 million to the National Laboratory for Applied Network Research (NLANR) Measurement and Network Analysis (MNA) group for work to be conducted over the next three years.

GRID COMPUTING -- TODAY AND TOMORROW: ANOTHER VIEW
A comprehensive grid is a dynamic network of computing resources that work together as a single, uniform operating environment. It can span locations and administrative domains, and can flexibly support dynamically changing organizations and computing requirements.

Quote Of The Week

"A Grid is an environment that provides access and management for the whole range of computing resources needed to solve complex computing and data handling problems. A Grid is not batch schedulers, cluster managers or storage systems that happen to be connected to the Internet. Rather, a Grid is a well understood and standardized set of services that provide uniform access to a large number of diverse and distributed resources, together with several critical auxiliary services for resource discovery and secure communication based on authenticated, global identity." -- William E. Johnston, Senior Scientist, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab
